Full-time PhD Studentship
Stipend: £14,000 per annum provided by Drapers with supervision fees met by the University
Three years Full-time PhD focused on:
Rediscovering compassion and caring in the nursing workforce: integrating aesthetics into nursing education and training for improved dementia care practice.
Delivering technical care of increasing complexity, whilst maintaining a person and family centred approach within dementia services, requires creative approaches to professional education and training. Aesthetics such as the use of drama, art and music may be catalysts for deeper reflection on the self, and how this is used emotionally in clinical situations. Consequently implementing aesthetics in professional development programmes may facilitate the engagement of clinicians in understanding personhood, and in the delivery of compassionate care in contexts such as palliative and end of life care in mainstream hospital and community services.
Bangor University’s School of Healthcare Sciences is committed to working in partnership with health services in North Wales to design and deliver new solutions which improve healthcare in North Wales. Supported by the Drapers Company, this PhD opportunity is part of such collaborative working, and centred on developing innovative approaches to clinical care that have a direct benefit for patient experience.
The successful candidate will be supported to construct a doctoral programme that develops and tests a set of new, creative approaches to workforce and organisational development that supports professionals to critically evaluate and develop their contribution to dementia care. This PhD has the potential to make a significant impact to healthcare quality, and complements other School research programmes around quality in healthcare, including at the interface of aesthetics and healthcare design.
The School of Healthcare Sciences provides a vibrant and supportive home for our research students incorporating access to a team of academic supervisors; dedicated office space; seminars and conferences; and research and leadership training. Our research strategy is programmatic, covering a broad range of methodological and clinical themes, and includes a programme in dementia care. Our research environment includes a fully accredited Clinical Trials Unit; the North Wales Centre for Primary Care Research, and the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation.
